If after you have read the Questionnaire below, you would like to fill it out, then please contact who will email it to you.

Rather than filling it out as a Form on the site (which would have involved Dr Hackenbush doing some CGI programming, to which he has a pathological aversion ever since he singed his eyebrows with an errant Zippo) it is easier to have Mr Hawkins email you the questionnaire.

That way you also can mail it straight back to him using your "Reply" button.

Contaminated Land Questionnaire

Contaminated land and landfill tax is an area of interest, which I encounted during my industrial placement year in 1997-98. From my involvement with the remediation procedure as a site engineer for Kier London Ltd, I had a good foundation to build on for my final year research project.

A major section of my final year research project is to investigate the views of the industry regarding current and innovative remediation processes, and the role of the landfill tax (this forms the aim of the attached questionnaire).

After completing my industrial placement year I can appreciate the limited availability of time. I would therefore be extremely grateful if you could spend a few moments to complete this questionnaire and return it to the above address before 30th January 1999.

Please complete the following as comprehensively as possible, by placing a tick in the relevant box and adding your own views. Please feel free to elaborate on any points raised.

I am very grateful for your time, thanking you in anticipation,

Yours sincerely,

W.J.Hawkins. (Final year, undergraduate, civil engineering student)

  1. List in order of priority, the factors considered when choosing a remediation method for the development of a contaminated site;

    • Cost-effectiveness. ( )
      • Environmental nuisance. ( ) (E.g. Removal of soil from site in trucks passing through populated areas)
      • Proven method. ( )
      • Site investigation requirements. ( )
      • Site monitoring. ( )
      • Speed of remediation method. ( )
      • Other: .................... ( )

      • Is traditional dig and dump the cheapest remedial method? (Please tick);

        • Yes. ( )
          • No. ( )
          • Not any more. ( )
          • Comments: ....................

          • In your opinion is the landfill tax (please tick);

              • Just right. ( )
              • Comments: ....................

              • To date, the introduction of a landfill tax has (please tick);

                • encouraged the use of alternative remedial methods to the traditional dig and dump and so decreased the amount of landfilling. ( )
                  • had little effect on the use of alternative remedial methods. ( )
                  • had no effect at all on your operations and activities ( )

                  • My research to date has shown that a wide range of innovative remediation technologies have been proven in the United States, the Netherlands and Germany. These have been offered within the UK recently, although these appear to be considered too expensive and so therefore are not commonly used.

                    In your opinion what would raising landfill tax achieve? (Please tick);

                    • The use and development of more innovative remedial methods. ( )
                      • An increase in use of tried remedial methods in conjunction with dig and dump ( )
                      • Nothing. ( )
